A very enlightening moment for me about eurosnobbery was the revelation that “soccer” was a common term for the sport _even in the UK_ into the 1970s, when they got negatively polarized against it because of the NASL launch in the U.S.

I bring this up because the USA has administered Cuba more recently (1902) than the PRC has Taiwan (never) and has the second largest number of speakers of Cuba’s language, yet we can clearly see annexation would be chauvinistic and wrong. Ask why you can’t see it for Taiwan too.
There isn’t an American leftist alive who’d be enthusiastic about the USA annexing Cuba. Yet some will act ambivalent about Taiwan despite it being a similar situation.
