I stand on the shoulders of all those who have come before me. Not one thing about the life I live today that hasn't been born on the backs of the struggles of the past. #ThankYouMLK50 ...But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep. The below continues to play out. The market values Netflix at $45B more as of a few hours ago. The virtuous cycle continues (invest to earn engagement -> lower churn -> better cash flow -> investment -> engagement…)
Netflix is getting closer to financially being *all* of Pay TV globally, which would mean no truly competitive distribs and the big $$$ that cable broadcast channels earn today would be kept by NFLX only. Licensing shows will still be a thing, but that’s v small $ in comparison

The most imp thing entertainment/media company leadership boards have needed to do (and still need to do) is make it very clear their co is well positioned to credibly generate *material* cash flow in a digital world going forward. A path to break even/modest returns = not enough

Saying that streaming is a bad business is like saying that retailing is a bad business. Both are misnomers. Strong financial returns can be achieved ( are being achieved) but it requires the right strategy, appropriate resources, and great execution over long periods of time.

Dr. King’s commitment to equality and justice inspired generations to fight for civil rights. His words continue to resonate around the world, and #MLKDay serves as a reminder to all of us to keep building on his legacy. If you can, take a moment today to think about how you can make your neighborhood or your community stronger – in ways large or small.

Let me help you out and give you my thoughts on DEI 1. Diversity Good businesses look where others don't, to find the employees that will put your business in the best possible position to succeed. You may not agree, but I take it as a given that there are people of various races, ethnicities, orientation, etc that are regularly excluded from hiring consideration. By extending our hiring search to include them, we can find people that are more qualified. The loss of DEI-Phobic companies is my gain. 1a. We live in a country with very diverse demographics. In this era where trust of businesses can be hard to come by, people tend to connect more easily to people who are like them. Having a workforce that is diverse and representative of your stakeholders is good for business.

Replying to @EdKrassen
Discrimination on the basis of race, which DEI does, is literally the definition of racism

Another significant win for voters. A Georgia federal court has ruled that Georgia’s congressional and state legislative maps are gerrymanders that violate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act for diluting the voting power of Black Georgians.  New maps for 2024 elections.

As always, a thoughtful & future-forward-thinking essay in these evolving media/tech times… “There are no shortcuts in streaming. Earning scaled engagement (either on your own or collectively) is a prerequisite to earning attractive cash flows from streaming. Full stop.” #Truth
I wrote an essay titled “Hollywood Needs Its Biggest Hit Yet. Here’s How It Can Make It Happen.” The link is below. For those that prefer things delivered in tweet-sized packages, here is a thread of some of the highlights. variety.com/2023/tv/news/jas…

Sixty years ago, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom showed us what's possible when ordinary people come together to push for change. Now it’s up to all of us to protect and build on that progress, and create a better future for generations to come.

Tina Turner was raw. She was powerful. She was unstoppable. And she was unapologetically herself—speaking and singing her truth through joy and pain; triumph and tragedy. Today we join fans around the world in honoring the Queen of Rock and Roll, and a star whose light will never fade.
