Lawmakers in New Jersey are considering a bill that would require police agencies to screen officers for signs of bias or extremism when they're hired, and then again every 5 years after... but the state's police union opposes it.
This is a very modest bill and their reaction to it is exactly why it's needed.
Cops carry guns, arrest people, use force, and exercise state power with qualified immunity.
If a cop has racist, homophobic, xenophobic, or extremist views, there should be safeguards in place that protect the public from them.
