A 20-year-old with the cognitive capacity of a small child is being released from custody onto Edmonton’s streets tomorrow with no ID, no bank account, no supports, and severe mental health challenges. He eats all his antipsychotic medication at once because he cannot manage it independently. This, in my opinion, is abandonment of a profoundly vulnerable disabled young man to exploitation, overdose, homelessness, and likely death. Systems keep talking about “supports,” but where are they when release day comes?
