Access to Southeast Asia's largest consumer platforms is a core part of what Mike Maté, General Partner at Kickstart Ventures, offers the North American companies it backs.
Kickstart Ventures is a corporate venture fund supported by the Ayala Group in the Philippines. It invests primarily in North American AI companies and helps them enter Southeast Asian markets through existing distribution channels within its network.
Mike points to platforms like GCash, with around 90 million users, and Globe, with 60 million users, as examples of the scale these portfolio companies can tap into. Without Kickstart's involvement, most foreign companies would have no direct path to those channels.
The model works in both directions. Kickstart gets access to global technology companies that would not typically look to the Philippines for early investment. Those companies, in return, get a route into one of the fastest-growing consumer bases in the region.
