I saw a tweet yesterday someone trying to downplay Madina Maishanu’s work simply because she posted that Hafsat Kamal is safe and asked why she doesn’t focus on insecurity. It’s unfair, Madina Maishanu has repeatedly put herself on the frontlines asking powerful politicians difficult questions and holding them accountable. She has risked her safety to tell stories many of us only read about or watch. Just months ago, she was in Maiduguri reporting after the bomb blast. Where were the critics then? We should not diminish the work of journalists who show courage in the face of power. Kudos to Madina Maishanu. Her fearlessness and commitment to truth are inspiring. She speaks truth to power without fear, regardless of who is involved. She is one of the reasons I’m developing a strong interest in journalism. I’m starting my Master’s degree next year and seriously considering Mass Communication because I want to speak for my people and be a voice for the voiceless. Our stories must be told, and our leaders must be held accountable. Keep shining, Madina. Nigeria needs more journalists like you.
