A friend just sent me this. Apparently my God's Good Design book made it onto the SBTS bookstore shelf. I'll take it.

My wife wrote an excellent piece about Christian friendships. She addresses lies we believe about friendship and practical steps towards developing healthy friendships. "The Bible doesn’t command you to be loved. It commands you to love. So stop waiting for someone to initiate and go first." dmichaelclary.com/p/lessons-…

How can you tell if your compassion has been weaponized to bypass discernment? Simple. The pattern works in three moves. 1. Lead with suffering. Pain triggers our compassion and activates our emotions. That's normal and human. Your heart gets racing before your brain catches up. 2. Create a sense of urgency. If someone is in pain, then rescuing them is an emergency. There's no time to think, reflect, or even discern if it's true. SOMEONE IS SUFFERING! SOMETHING MUST BE DONE NOW! Speed becomes the measure of love. Slowness becomes cruelty. 3. Discredit your judgment. If you say, "hold on a minute, what's really going on here?", you will seem heartless. Why? Because the time it takes to accurately discern the situation prolongs the victim's suffering. The person who cares about truth will be seen as an evil monster who doesn't care about peoples' pain. Asking questions to discern the truth is seen as heartless and cruel. In the end, people abandon discernment because the crowd demands it. They are the compassionate ones. For them, ignoring the truth is a badge of virtue. They are on a moral crusade to ease the world's suffering, even though some of the suffering is manufactured by propagandists to manipulate them into doing this very thing. Thus, the most emotionally manipulated people are absolutely convinced of their moral superiority. They are the humble ones who truly love people, feel compassion, and will do what it takes to ease the suffering of others. Everyone else is a cold hearted snake.
