Under the theme “Big Tech, Data Governance, and Competition Policy in Africa’s Digital Economy,” the summit will bring together key stakeholders to explore practical and sustainable approaches to digital market regulation across Africa. As conversations around data protection, platform accountability, competition, and digital rights continue to shape Africa’s digital future, collaborative platforms like the BTA Summit are essential for building policies that protect citizens, empower businesses, and foster innovation. What a week it has been! Two legal victories at both regional and national levels against a global tech giant (Meta Platforms) 1. A prima facie case determination by the COMESA Competition Commission — with implications across 21 African Member States. 2. A landmark ruling by the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO) — directly impacting over 10 million WhatsApp users in Uganda. #AdLegal #Uganda #COMESA

Tough questions now arise for the broadcast industry: what happens to existing advertising contracts built around split-screen ads? This is an industry disruptor!! Weldone Adlegal team. Proudly associated 💯

Meta’s WhatsApp AI policy is under investigation by the COMESA Competition Commission following a complaint by Adlegal International alleging abuse of dominance. The probe concerns changes to WhatsApp Business terms that restrict third-party AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Poe and Luzia, from accessing WhatsApp’s Business API, while favouring Meta AI, raising concerns over competition, consumer choice, and AI innovation in the COMESA region. Adlegal is seeking interim measures to suspend enforcement pending a full investigation.
