i used to fear mamdani was too young to oversee a city like new york and now i realize our politicians should ... have energy? and stamina?

oh there are still some good things in this iffy timeline 🎶❣️🎶
We’ve been covering Nick Hakim since 2014, and he’s overdue to properly blow up. His brilliant latest music might get him there. The Queens-based musician always pops up in fascinating places — in recent years he’s had credits on albums by Adrianne Lenker, Pink Siifu, Eddie Chacon, Miley Cyrus, Show Me The Body, Beth Orton, Lil Yachty, and more. (He also joined Dijon on ‘SNL’ last year.) Hakim’s own catalog is aging beautifully, too. The spectral soul tracks “Real Here Now” and “Water,” out now via Earseed Records, place Hakim in conversation with the greats. “Real Here Now” drifts through grief and memory, with Hakim’s vocals hovering over glassy piano and a crisp backbeat. “Water” is mostly just Hakim, a piano, and a bottomless well of heartbreak. Both songs, co-produced by Andrew Sarlo, are stunning, and on Friday we picked the former for our 5 Best Songs Of The Week countdown. Hear “Real Here Now” on Stereogum’s Favorite New Music playlist on Spotify, and check out Hakim’s YouTube for live performances of both songs — featuring backing vocals from June McDoom — filmed at Lalibela in Baltimore. JFK once invited to dinner 49 Nobel laureates, Robert Frost, William Styron, Ernest Hemingway, James Baldwin, Katherine Anne Porter, John Dos Passos, James Farrell and Lionel and Diana Trilling, and others. His line on the occasion became famous: “I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered together at the White House—with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone." Some of you were alive when that happened.
“Michelle Obama is a man” shouted on the White House lawn in a ring sponsored by Bud Light only available on Larry Ellison’s Paramount Plus. What a way to celebrate America 250 and the twilight of liberal democracy.

People forget that pre-mid 00s, if you didn’t physically own a copy of a piece of music then the only way you were going to hear it was by chance - on the radio, on TV or in a film, or through someone else’s physical copy.

pretty shitty how baseline human activities like singing, dancing and making art got turned into skills instead of being seen as behaviors so now it's like 'the point of doing them is to get good at them' and not 'this is a thing humans do, the way birds sing and bees make hives.
