My very talented teacher friend @MissGeorge90 just posted some wonderings about moving students off decodable texts. It’s a Q many T’s grapple with. Expert responses appreciated!

3 - Or do you just gradually provide texts with a bigger variety of sounds/letter combinations over say, a term, and ideally students’ decoding skills will keep up with this? Appreciate people’s thoughts šŸ™‚

2 - At what point do you begin to move students away from reading strictly decodable texts and onto more ā€˜regular’ (or less phonically controlled) texts? Is there a certain set of prerequisite skills you’d want to see a student demonstrating?

1 - Hoping some clever people can help with a question about reading fluency and text selection, particularly for Prep/Year One readers.

Anyone else noticed F students less ā€˜school ready?’ Not just this year but increasingly so each year? Lockdowns but also screen use? I rarely see a 2 year old without their parents phone in their hand in the stroller. I need to get local kinder teachers together…we need to chat!

First day Term 3. Quality teaching, based on routines and expectations. Kids happy and learning. I reflected on literacy data, ā¬†ļøfor our kids, all based on post-uni PD. I walked around asking myself ā€˜where did we learn to implement this? Or this?’ Please listen. ITE needs reform.

This sums up my job. Have worked most of the hols on OHS, admin, finance and school review. Also put this image on staff bulletin to thank ES who feeds school chooks all holidays. Sending list of OHS modules to staff and the giant chook popped up šŸ˜‚šŸ“. This is my life…

My beautiful 14 month-old fully qualified therapy dog is at school most days. S’s reading to her isn’t what’s improving our reading results. It’s teachers knowing the SoR/SoL and applying that knowledge in their classrooms.
