This is a pressing issue that can be solved by a policy exemption, which we continue to advocate for.

Today, the European Union took a major step forward. All Member States agreed to open the first accession negotiations cluster with Ukraine and Moldova. At the first Intergovernmental Conference on Monday, we will open the cluster on fundamentals; the backbone of the accession process. It covers the core values and principles on which the EU is built, from the rule of law to strong democratic institutions. This is a recognition of the determination, courage and hard work shown by both countries in advancing reforms, even in the face of immense challenges. And a signal that the EU’s offer of peace, stability and opportunity is unmatchable. Enlargement is a strategic choice. By bringing our nations closer together, we strengthen peace, security and prosperity across our continent. In a world marked by growing uncertainty, a larger European Union is in our common interest. Enlargement remains one of the EU’s greatest success stories and our best investment in our shared future.

This morning, a Toronto Police Officer, Constable Marc Pinizzotto, was killed in the line of duty. This tragedy follows the death of OPP Constable Tarun Bali on Tuesday. Canada mourns the loss of these brave officers who dedicated their lives to protecting their communities. My prayers are with their loved ones, their fellow officers, and their communities in this time of grief.

Great to see this support. Especially important during a time of rising hate.

I strongly condemn the vandalism of the Castle Mountain Internment Camp memorial in Banff. This memorial honours the memory of those who were unjustly interned during Canada’s first national internment operations, including many Ukrainians and other Europeans whose civil liberties were stripped away. Damaging a place of remembrance is deeply disrespectful to their memory, to their descendants, and to all Canadians who believe we must confront the difficult chapters of our history honestly. My thoughts are with the Ukrainian-Canadian community and all those hurt by this shameful act.

Today, we raised the Pride flag on Parliament Hill — a symbol of belonging, an act of vigilance, and a beacon to all those who are not yet free.   It reminds us that with our freedom comes responsibility — to keep building a better, more just Canada.

This afternoon the Pride Flag was raised over Parliament with the Prime Minister and the Canadian Pride Caucus. Our message is clear. Pride is a Canadian value and one worth continuing to fight for both at home and abroad.
