Perfect articulation of my experience; “the ambiguity of creepy people” plus a sincere desire not to be horrible to someone who *maybe* sincerely doesn’t understand the vibe they give off.
The ambiguity of creepy people often makes it tough to know exactly how to respond in the moment. But you are right- we often, annoyingly, first consider that we are part of the problem.
Had a mildly creepy experience with a contractor here to give a quote on repair work. (Inappropriate comments, questions, a too-familiar touch on the arm.) Why did my brain go right to the old script? (“Maybe I’m overreacting,” etc.)
