There's a lot of interest about the revisions in the BLS payroll numbers. A lot of this has to do with how the BLS adjusts for birth / death of businesses. How fitting then that our paper on exactly this issue was just published in @JPubEcon! 1/n authors.elsevier.com/c/1llCA…

If AI and workers were strong complements, what would we see?, joshuagans.substack.com/p/if… Does the latest data tell us AI is a substitute for human work? Nope. Is that comforting? Also nope. My comments on @erikbryn and co. (and @Noahpinion)

Long-story short: - The method works well, even under extreme circumstances. - But there are also important challenges with regards to data consistency / availability. - That's why it's not so easy for the BLS to "just use a better method" 10/n

Nonetheless, we hope our method provides food for thought on how to improve real-time measurement of employment. For all the details, read the paper @JPubEcon or at authors.elsevier.com/c/1llCA…. 11/11 #econtwitter @BLS_gov

It seems like there is not enough of a policy response to the fact that, with 57M miles of data, Waymo’s autonomous vehicles experience 85% less serious injuries & 79% less injuries overall than cars with human drivers. 2.4 million are injured & 40k killed in US accidents a year

Excited to return to @Wharton this Fall to teach Global Macro in the #WEMBA program! We are living through unprecedented times with many different shocks hitting the economy. Great to analyze the consequences of these events with such a talented and diverse group!

Shocked and sad to hear about Marcus' untimely passing. He was an amazing economist, unafraid to go wherever scientific discovery led him. sas.upenn.edu/~manovski/Reme…

With great sadness, I announce the passing of my co-author and friend, Marcus Hagedorn. His acerbic wit was as sharp as the vision of Toni Kroos. He attacked big research questions like he tackled the mountains of Mallorca on his bike. He will be missed.
