The President’s response to the news surrounding Rob Reiner was beneath the dignity of the office. It feels like he’s hit rock bottom, and somehow keeps digging. At moments like this, our leaders should show basic decency and respect for a life spent contributing to our culture, not score points or sow division. We can, and must, do better.

Today’s targeted attacks in DC are a stark reminder that our democracy demands courage, not chaos. Violence has no place in our politics. Not now, not ever. I’m holding the National Guard troops who were targeted, and all our service members, in my heart today. Their service and sacrifice keep our nation safe. We stand with them, their families, and the first responders who rushed in.

The good news: it looks like the government will open again soon. Federal workers will finally get their paychecks, and SNAP benefits are fully funded through September, meaning families won’t go hungry even if we face another shutdown in February. That’s real relief for real people.
But I’m disappointed that Democratic leadership chose to punt on the ACA subsidy issue. Affordable healthcare shouldn’t be a bargaining chip, it’s a lifeline for millions. Once again, Washington kicks the can down the road instead of solving the problem.
We need leaders willing to face hard choices and deliver lasting solutions, not just temporary fixes.
