Chelsea Women’s move away from Kingsmeadow has been coming for a while, but hearing that next season’s cup competition home matches will be played at the Cherry Red Records Stadium makes it feel real in a way it never has before.
For so many of us, Kingsmeadow was never just a football ground. It was where we celebrated league titles, witnessed unforgettable European nights, watched legends come and go and saw Chelsea grow from a team chasing success into one that expected it.
But what made Kingsmeadow special wasn’t just the trophies. It was the feeling of being there. You could hear the players, they could hear you and there was always a sense that everyone inside that stadium was part of something together. The connection between the fans and the team felt genuine and unique.
As the women’s game continues to grow, bigger venues are the right step. Chelsea deserve bigger crowds, bigger stages and the opportunity to reach even more people. Playing more matches at larger stadiums is a reflection of how far this team and the game itself have come.
But that doesn’t make saying goodbye any easier. Because what made Kingsmeadow special can’t be measured by attendance figures or trophy counts. It was the place where friendships were formed, traditions were created and countless memories were made. For many supporters, it was where we truly fell in love with this team.
The move to Wimbledon marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. There is so much to look forward to and so much potential for Chelsea Women to keep growing. But at the same time, it feels like the end of something that meant a great deal to so many of us.
Years from now, people will talk about the trophies and the dominance of this Chelsea side. But those of us who were there will remember Kingsmeadow too. We’ll remember the cold nights, the last minute winners, the celebrations, the familiar faces in the stands and the feeling of being part of a community that grew alongside the team.
No matter where the team plays in the future, the memories made there will always belong to the fans who lived them.
