Red squirrels on camera 🐿️ At one of our former release sites just outside Golspie, there have been sightings of thriving #redsquirrels, including kits. “Having lived in the Highlands for nearly 30 years, red squirrels have always felt like magical creatures that we could never expect to see. So it’s been wonderful to see their numbers increase over the past few years, and it still feels a little unreal that they’ve become part of our everyday lives.” - Georgia, local resident We’re helping red squirrels return to parts of their former range, and it’s wonderful to see so much enthusiasm from local #communities as they welcome these iconic animals back. The world’s mangrove forests are staging an unexpected comeback. Mangroves store up to five times more CO2 than land-based forests, and they protect and support marine wildlife - so this is great news for nature and the environment! bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn4p…

It’s estimated less than 10% of plastic waste is recycled. It takes up to 500 years for plastic to break down in landfill, & plastic pollution harms marine wildlife. Reducing single-use plastics, eg buying zero-waste & refillable products, can help. More: littlegreenspace.org.uk/feat…

Gone are the Ox-eye Daisies & Buttercups. From 'No Mow May' to 'Mow Mow June'.... the same roadside verges got mowed today. I wonder what you think? Pretty much zero pollen & nectar, no 'slowing the flow', no significant biodiversity benefit. Also it doesn't look great either...

Herbs are easy to grow and wonderful in the kitchen. Many thrive in small spaces, and tolerate warm, dry weather. And they provide food and shelter for all sorts of insects. Here are some to try: 🌱 rosemary 🌱 oregano 🌱 chives 🌱 chamomile More: littlegreenspace.org.uk/feat…

When I am asked, Is there anything people can do at home to help bees, whether they have a garden, patio, window box, or local green space? Absolutely. One of the simplest and most meaningful things we can do is grow flowers. Over the past century, England has lost around 97% of its wildflower meadows. These once-vibrant landscapes provided food and shelter for countless pollinators, and their disappearance has had a profound impact on bee populations across the country. The good news is that even the smallest space can make a difference. Whether you have a large garden, a few pots on a patio, a window box, or access to a community green space, planting bee-friendly flowers creates valuable feeding stations for pollinators. Individually, these may seem like small acts, but together they form a network of habitats that help bees thrive. By choosing native wildflowers, you’re not only bringing beauty and colour into your surroundings, you’re helping to restore a tiny piece of the landscape that bees have lost.

More than 4 out of 10 insect species face extinction. Others are declining badly. We can help in our gardens and community spaces by not being too tidy, planting nectar-rich flowers & trees, and not using weedkillers and pesticides. More: littlegreenspace.org.uk/feat…

For the first time in over 400 years, there is a beaver dam in #GlenAffric! 🦫 The ultimate example of their ecosystem engineering, #beaver dams create deeper pools, slow the flow of water, improve water quality, and provide rich habitats for #wildlife such as fish, frogs, otters and birds.

Today, we’re launching our "Every Child Outdoors" campaign. Every child deserves the chance to connect with nature, but nearly half of children are missing out on school trips due to the cost. A residential trip can be transformational in so many ways, building resilience and confidence, improving communication and teamwork skills, and making new connections with their peers and with the natural world. A donation to our appeal will help us say yes to more requests for support from schools needing funded places to access outdoor education. “Seeing my students thrive outdoors has transformed my perspective. I’ve witnessed increased confidence, teamwork, and curiosity in ways that don’t always surface in the classroom.” - Teacher Donate here: buff.ly/QsfV7Xi

Kitchen sponges like these release microplastics which end up in the sea, harming ocean creatures. And they can't be recycled, so they sit in landfill for hundreds of years. Eco-friendly, compostable sponges are available - see: littlegreenspace.org.uk/revi…

Lynx to Scotland update 🐆 Earlier this year, the Lynx to Scotland partnership engaged with 1,640 people at 42 information sessions across Highland and Moray. Thanks to everyone who has shared their thoughts and provided feedback. We’re currently analysing over 1,000 questionnaires completed during and after these sessions. Many people also requested 1:1 conversations which our Engagement Officers are carrying out this summer to understand local concerns and potential benefits that a potential lynx reintroduction could bring. Once the individual conversations are complete, the Lynx to Scotland partnership has a Community Feedback phase planned for later this year.
