Steve Finley of the #Giants hit the 300th homer of his career #OTD in 2006. With the homer, Finley became the sixth player with both 300 homers and 300 steals, joining Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonds, Andre Dawson, Willie Mays, and Reggie Sanders.

Don Newcombe, pitcher mostly for the #Dodgers and #Reds, born #OTD in 1926. A four-time All-Star, he was Rookie of the Year in 1949, and in 1956 he was National League MVP and won the first ever Cy Young Award when he led the league with 27 wins and a .794 win percentage.

The #Indians acquired first baseman Mike Hargrove from the #Padres #OTD in 1979 in exchange for outfielder Paul Dade. Hargrove, “The Human Rain Delay”, would spend seven years in Cleveland and hit .292 with a 116 OPS . Dade played just 144 games for the Padres.

Duke Snider of the #Mets hit his 400th career home run #OTD in 1963 against the #Reds. It was the longtime #Dodger’s only year with the Mets. Snider would retire a year later with 407 career HRs and 1,333 RBI, and was elected to the #HallofFame in 1980.

Mike McCormick, pitcher mostly for the #Giants, died #OTD in 2020. A four-time All-Star, he led the National League in ERA in 1960, and won the 1967 NL Cy Young Award when he led the league with 22 wins. McCormick had a 134-128 record in 16 seasons.

Ted Williams of the #RedSox hit three home runs against #Cleveland #OTD in 1957, becoming the first American League player to have two three-homer games in one season. He also hit three on May 8 against the #WhiteSox. Williams ended the season with 38 homers and batted .388.

In a 5-2 win over the #Cardinals, Roger Clemens of the #Yankees won his 300th game and collected his 4,000th strikeout #OTD in 2003. Clemens would end his career ninth in all-time wins and third in strikeouts in major league history.

Mel Parnell, left-handed pitcher for the #RedSox, was born #OTD in 1922. A two-time All-Star, he won 20 games twice, and in 1949 led the American League in wins, ERA and WAR. Parnell threw a no-hitter in 1956 and retired with a record of 123-75 in ten seasons.

For the first time in #MLB history, two former batting champions were traded for each other #OTD in 1930 when the #Browns swapped Goose Goslin to the #Senators for Heinie Manush. Both outfielders would later make the #HallofFame.

June 13 was a big day in the life of Christy Mathewson. In 1905, he threw his second career no-hitter #OTD, a 1-0 win over the #Cubs. And seven years later, #OTD in 1912, Mathewson won his 300th career game, a 3-2 victory, also over the Cubs.

The Baseball Hall of Fame was formally opened and dedicated #OTD in 1939 in Cooperstown, New York. Among those in attendance were most of the living members who had been elected in prior years, including Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, Tris Speaker, and Young.

Hideki Matsui was born #OTD in 1974. After ten years starring in the Japanese Central League, he signed with the #Yankees in 2003, made two All-Star teams, and was MVP of the 2009 World Series. Matsui hit 508 career homers between Japan and the U.S.

Justin Verlander of the #Tigers threw a no-hitter against the #Brewers #OTD in 2007. It was the sixth no-hitter in Tigers history and the first in the history of Comerica Park. Verlander went on to win 18 games and finish fifth in Cy Young voting that year.

Bill "Willie" Foster, pitcher mostly for the Chicago American Giants, was born #OTD in 1904. The brother of Rube Foster, he led the league in ERA four times, shutouts three times, and wins and strikeouts once each.He was elected to the #HallofFame in 1996. @nlbmprez

Billy Williams, in his first year with the #Athletics, hit his 400th career home run #OTD in 1975. The six-time All-Star and longtime member of the #Cubs would end his career with 426 homers and election to the #HallofFame in 1987.

Pitcher Dock Ellis of the #Pirates threw a no-hitter #OTD in 1970, a 2-0 victory over the #Padres. He later admitted being under the influence of LSD at the time, an admission he later regretted as it detracted from his advocacy for addiction recovery.

Roger Bresnahan, catcher mostly for the #Giants and #Cardinals, was born #OTD in 1879. A three-time .300 hitter, he led the league in walks in 1908 and in being hit by pitches in 1906. Bresnahan had a 126 OPS for his career and was elected to the #HallofFame in 1945.

#OTD in 1988, Rick Rhoden of the #Yankees became the first pitcher to start at designated hitter since the DH rule was passed in 1973. He went 0-for-2 with a sacrifice fly. An excellent athlete, he became a professional golfer after his career ended.

José Reyes, who enjoyed a 16-year #MLB career mostly with the #Mets and #BlueJays, was born #OTD in 1983. Reyes made four All-Star teams, led the league in steals three times, triples four times, and won the 2011 National League batting title.

Catcher Sammy White of the #RedSox hit a walk-off grand slam against future #HallofFamer Satchel Paige #OTD in 1952. It was the only grand slam of White’s career. Coincidentally, both Paige and White were born on July 7, twenty-one years apart.
