Our Swift telescope’s fast response, combined with future gravitational wave detectors like @ESA’s LISA (a partnership with @NASA), will be key for revealing the nature of supermassive black holes in the cores of active galaxies. #Swift20

ALT This animated GIF shows what we might see if we looked at two black holes through the disk of gas that is swirling around them. The gas is bright orange close to the black holes and fades out to shades of purple farther out. As the animation proceeds, one black hole moves in front of the other, from our point of view. When one black hole is in front of the other, the orange light is magnified in an arc that then encircles the black hole. These effects look like a fun house mirror. The image is watermarked with “Simulation” and “Credit: NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center/Scott Noble; simulation data, d'Ascoli et al. 2018.”

Not only @LISACommunity , but first with @NANOGrav for the most massive supermassive black holes — a billion times the mass of the sun

Congratulations to the LVK community on this record achievement! The ton of upgrade work done since O3 really paid off 👏

🎉 We have reached 200 candidates in O4! 🎉 The fourth observing run (O4) of our detector network has had the best performance so far, with more candidates than ever before! We are currently busy analysing all these wonderful data and look forward to sharing results #O4IsHere

#LISACommunityTalks The #LISACommunity recently hosted a talk by Philip Lynch on a paper by Philip Lynch, Vojtěch Witzany, Maarten van de Meent, Niels Warburton: "Fast inspirals and the treatment of orbital resonances", here 👉 iopscience.iop.org/article/1… and arxiv.org/abs/2405.21072

>> We describe a procedure for efficiently evolving the system where one averages out all of the short term dynamics when sufficiently far away from a resonance but then switches to resolving the resonant dynamics when close to a resonance. >>

>> We then test the speed and accuracy of this procedure when evolving through multiple orbital resonances."

The new lab and clean rooms will be hosted at the Science and Technology Facility Council’s UK ATC site in Edinburgh. This £10 million ESA contract will double UK ATC’s construction capabilities, and build on existing support from the @spacegovuk and its membership of ESA.

The optical benches send and receive the laser beams over a 2.5 Mkm distance between the 3 LISA spacecraft, enabling measurement of distance changes between them with an accuracy of a few trillionths of a metre (picometre). Work on the optical benches has already begun at @ukatc.
