In case anyone isn’t aware, Trump is demanding Zambia to hand over its mineral rights by end of day tomorrow or the U.S. gov’t will cut off the country’s access to the AIDS medications that are literally keeping its citizens alive. Just thought y’all should know.ļæ¼

I believe progress is possible even in hard times. The day Trump returned to the WH, @UNHumanRights issued rulings protecting girls in Latin America—with global implications. With @EnidMuthoni1 of @ReproRights, I wrote on hope persistence: context.news/socioeconomic-i…

This study examines the circumstances under which abortion may be legally permitted in Uganda and other African countries, looking at the exceptions and defences within the law. It demonstrates the circumstances under which those who seek or provide these life-saving abortion and post-abortion care services can do so without the threat of legal prosecution. In that regard, it enhances the foundations for strategic litigation against punitive penal provisions and legal defences for individuals caught up in the criminal justice system by the law on abortion. The paper clarifies what the law actually says, exposes contradictions and barriers, and provides evidence that can strengthen advocacy to decriminalise abortion in the case-study countries and across Africa. On May 19, 2022, two colleagues from SMUG went to Ntinda Police Station in Kampala to report a case of malicious damage to property. Instead of receiving justice, they were arrested, coerced into making statements, and detained overnight—facing assault charges brought by the very perpetrator, Elisha Joshua Mukisa. For nearly three years, this case has dragged on. But today, we are thrilled to share that justice has finally been served—the case has been dismissed! #JusticeServed #HumanRights.

Free Mahmoud Khalil. This is straight out of the fascist playbook. Criminalizing dissent is an assault on our First Amendment and freedom of speech. Revoking someone’s green card for expressing their political opinion is illegal. Protesting genocide is not a crime.
A U.S. greencard holder of Palestinian origin, active in Columbia's student encampment, was arrested by ICE yesterday from his home, separated from his 8-month pregnant wife, told his greencard would be revoked, and taken into custody. America today. apnews.com/article/columbia-…

Words hardly capture how devastating these cuts are for millions who depend on @UNFPA’s work. This decision has a dire effect on women & girls around the world, stripping them of critical health care, including sexual & reproductive health services, and costing countless lives.

🚨 @UNFPA—the @UN sexual and reproductive health agency—notes with deep regret the termination of all funding agreements by the United States. See the statement by UNFPA Executive Director @Atayeshe on the US Government funding cuts: unf.pa/usfc #FundUNFPA

The Trump admin has shut down nearly all foreign aid, gutting decades of progress and disrupting essential health care services, including life-saving family planning and HIV care. These actions are reckless and devastating, and will cost millions of lives.npr.org/sections/goats-and-s…

🚨 Everyone should speak out about the halt to USAID’s lifesaving programs & moves to gut this critical agency. Millions will suffer—and this could set a dangerous precedent across the government.
My article on the ongoing, likely unconstitutional funding freeze at USAID now imperiling millions of lives: ā€œThis is not a pause. It is a destruction.ā€ USAID is also where the Administration is testing out its playbook for eviscerating other agencies. newyorker.com/news/the-lede/…

Absolutely devastating. With this policy, Trump is sending a message to the world: his administration would rather advance a dangerous political agenda than eradicate disease and preventable death around the world (and yes, Americans, we’re part of the world).
The #GlobalGagRule has been reinstated & it will have deadly consequences. This harmful U.S. policy blocks global health funding for orgs that provide abortion information and care, & as long as it is in place, people will suffer — especially women & girls around the world. 🧵

Debates around decoloniality have reemerged in recent years. Yet, we've heard little from African and Global South scholars about what they think. We are excited to launch our latest issue of African Social Research on "Decoloniality and Decolonization" feat. 13 original essays.

As we prepare for the likely return and possible expansion of the #GlobalGagRule, know this – we are committed to fighting this dangerous policy until it is gone for good. Everyone deserves access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health info, care and rights šŸŒšŸ’Ŗ
āš ļø The #GlobalGagRule has caused harm for four decades, restricting access to essential repro health care worldwide and endangering lives in the process. It's time to permanently end this dangerous policy and uphold the human right to health care for all. thehill.com/opinion/internat…

While today is awful, my true belief is that a just world with reproductive freedom for all is still possible. Even if Trump (and Trumpism) remains influential, his agenda is not inevitable. @ppglobe

But—and this is critical—as damaging as Trump is, it’s time we recognize that intersectionality, accessibility, and materiality aren’t just virtues to signal or boxes to check. They are essential, powerful tactics we must actively and ruthlessly deploy.

While the results of the U.S. presidential election are devastating, our commitment to sexual and reproductive health and rights worldwide remains the same. We will continue fighting alongside our partners to ensure everyone has access to the health care they need and deserve.
