Today, on Purple Heart Day, we honor all U.S. Veterans who were wounded or gave their lives in combat. Established by General George Washington on Aug. 7, 1782, as the Badge of Military Merit, it remains the oldest military decoration still awarded to American service members.

Last night, some staff, USNA Band members, '25 TADs, and mids were honored to attend a "Concert on the Avenue" in DC hosted by the @USNavyMemorial with the fab @usnavyband. The lovely backdrop was Navy Memorial Plaza with a setting sun and clear skies.

Every year, I share this video of French caretakers who take sand from Omaha Beach in Normandy, and scrub them into the letters to give them the gold coloring.
They do this for all 9,386 US soldiers who died.
France also gave us this land as American soil. #MemorialDayWeekend
Our busy lives can make it hard to keep up with loved ones and friends. Make the time today to pick up the phone and check on a buddy. You never know the positive impact one call can make.
I was featured on the USNA Sing Second Podcast @wesingsecond ... to talk about The Last Ring Home ... which will soon be shown nationally on the TV in the US (World Channel).

Our January newsletter is out now. We're publishing a wonderful letter home from a soldier based on Santo - well... we think it was Santo. We also report on a Japanese submarine that was likely sunk not far from Santo. All that and lots more at southpacificwwiimuseum.com/n…
A fantastic aerial shot of Bomber #1 (Pallikulo) Airfield on Santo. Not sure of the date, but most likely 1943/44. What's amazing, is the size of the camp to the right of the shot - it's enormous!
A great short film found in the US Archives from Turtle Bay fighter airfield on Santo. Shots of USMC pilots and their corsair aircraft taxiing, taking off and landing.
Looking forward to holding a film and book talk with this lovely group of ladies in Connecticut! Thanks to @aboretto for organising!
The Last Ring Home details the life of my grandparents, what each had to go through in WWII. @mdial
