I would quite literally, seriously, zero exaggeration here, have taken an overdose or thrown myself under a train as a teenager if I hadn't had social media to make friends. This is going to kill mentally ill children, not protect them.

Obviously there’s loads wrong with this social media ban - from adult civil liberties to the ridiculousness of giving 16 year olds the vote while only letting them consume government propaganda. But being 23, young enough to have used social media at school - it’s obvious this will create huge social divides in schools. The haves - whose parents let them use VPNs or use VPNs without their parents permission - will have access to a whole world that their peers won’t. The have nots who can’t access social media (perhaps a minority because the government will inevitably be useless at this) will be locked out of huge portions of youth culture, conversations, group chats and more. It’s going to be interesting to see how this effects voting intention but Labour have probably just nuked their chances of winning the 16 yr olds they only gave the vote to for political reasons which is a silver lining I suppose.
