Illustrating today's Gospel: "At that time: When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.’ And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. The names of the twelve Apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, ‘Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And proclaim as you go, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.’" – Matthew 9:36-10:8, which is today's Gospel for the 11th Sunday of Ordinary Time. 🙏My homily for today can be read here: tmblr.co/Z_p5txjUs0QW8m00 flic.kr/p/2siz9yW 📷Detail from Bernwald's column in the church of St Michael in Hildesheim.

My homily for this Sunday, on the symbolism of the Eagle and the eucatastrophe it effects, for God said to Moses: "You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.” (Ex 19:4) lawrenceop.tumblr.com/post/8…

"The world is very, very beautiful if you look at it, but most people don't look very much, do they? Scan the ground in front of them so they can walk, but they don't really look at things incredibly well, with an intensity. I do, and I've always known that." ~ David Hockney

Today, 13th June 2026, is the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. On the same day in 1917, Our Lady appeared to the children of Fatima for the second time, and she told Lucia de Los Santos: "My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God." Then in 1925, Our Lady again appeared to Sr Lucia with the Child Jesus who told her: "Have compassion on the Heart of your Most Holy Mother covered with the thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to remove them with an act of reparation." flic.kr/p/2siwwPB 📷 This painting, from the World Apostolate of Fatima in the UK, represents the apparition of the Immaculate Heart and Jesus to Sr Lucia in 1925. Today's the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and also the anniversary of the 2nd Fatima apparition. On June 13, 1917 Mary told the children “My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God.” Let us be united in the refuge of our blessed Mother's immaculate heart. ❤️🙏🏼

Decades ago, I worked for a diocese; then I worked at the Vatican for 15 years; and now I work for @Crux as an editor. I am not a “Catholic professional” – I am a “professional Catholic.” And “mea culpa”, we have too much control over thought in the Church. Most parishioners do not care about Latin Masses, women deacons, or married priests. They are wondering why they have to jump through hoops to get married, have their children baptized, and attend Catholic schools.

O God, who in the Heart of your Son, wounded by our sins, bestow on us in mercy the boundless treasures of your love, grant, we pray, that, in paying him the homage of our devotion, we may also offer worthy reparation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen. – Collect for today's Solemnity of the Sacred Heart. flic.kr/p/2sifu2b 📷Statue from the Cathedral of Santiago de Chile.
