Yesterday, our SafeNet license plate reader system alerted officers to a stolen U-Haul truck. B-Shift officers quickly located the vehicle at the Pilot Truck Stop on Murfreesboro Road, where the driver, a 43-year-old woman from Powell, Tennessee, was taken into custody without incident. Further investigation revealed the woman was in possession of suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Officers also discovered she had multiple active warrants out of Smith County. We appreciate the swift work of our officers in locating the stolen vehicle and safely taking the suspect into custody!

Last night, the Lebanon Police Department received information from the Murfreesboro Police Department that a wanted subject driving a stolen purple Dodge Charger had fled Murfreesboro and was believed to be en route to Lebanon. Additional Information received from Murfreesboro Police indicated that the driver was wanted on charges of felony theft and aggravated domestic assault. D-Shift officers quickly developed a strategic plan to intercept the vehicle as it entered the city. After locating the stolen Charger, officers attempted to conduct a high-risk traffic stop. The driver refused to stop, leading officers on a pursuit that ultimately ended in the Webster Estates neighborhood. Officers safely took the driver, 22-year-old Jean Perez Velasco, into custody without incident. In addition to his outstanding warrants, Velasco was charged locally with DUI, felony evading arrest, and driving on a revoked license. We are grateful this incident ended safely for everyone involved and appreciate the professionalism and diligent work of our officers.

The Lebanon Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance in locating 33-year-old Khaleel Smith, who is wanted in connection with an aggravated domestic assault that occurred early Sunday, June 7, at the Econo Lodge on South Cumberland Street. A reward of $500 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of Khaleel Smith. During the incident, Smith allegedly fired multiple rounds from the second-story of the hotel, striking the victim’s vehicle and a nearby Taco Bell building. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Smith, a convicted felon, is considered armed and dangerous. He is believed to have left the hotel property on foot, shirtless, wearing blue jeans and a red Bass Pro Shops hat. At this time, investigators do not have a direction of travel to share. In a separate incident on Saturday afternoon, June 6, officers responded to a report of a suspicious individual armed with a firearm who was observed looking through the windows of a residence in Lebanon. Following Sunday morning’s shooting investigation, officers and detectives were able to confidently identify Smith as the individual captured on surveillance video walking around the residence while armed with a handgun. If you have any information on the whereabouts of Khaleel Smith, do not approach him. Call 911 immediately.

Earlier this afternoon, officers responded to the Limestone Trail Apartments after our Communications Center received a report from a tenant who arrived home to discover bullet holes inside their apartment. Thankfully, no one was home at the time. Officers and detectives determined that a single round had traveled through a shared wall from a neighboring apartment, passed through another interior wall, and then ricocheted inside a bedroom. While processing the scene, crime scene technicians located the bullet inside a baby crib. After speaking with the occupants of the neighboring apartment, officers and detectives learned that a 14-year-old juvenile had accidentally discharged a firearm inside the residence. The firearm was later located inside the juvenile’s closet. Investigators then discovered that the gun had been stolen during a vehicle burglary that occurred in Lebanon on June 2. While speaking with the juvenile and a guardian, the juvenile became argumentative and combative. Officers took the juvenile into custody, but not before the juvenile resisted arrest, kicking and spitting on officers. The juvenile was transported to a juvenile detention facility and charged with multiple offenses, including possession of stolen property, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and multiple counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, among other charges. We are thankful that no one was injured in this incident. We are grateful for the diligent work of our officers who work every day to protect and serve our community!
