All traditional architecture clearly distinguishes between public symbolic institutional buildings and utilitarian private buildings. #goodurbanism

Instead of the closed perimeter block, the open palazzine insula bock type is made of several mixed-use buildings that create a dense and geometrically flexible, human-scaled network of public spaces. zeroc.co.uk/about-zeroc/news…

[Poundbury] is in Europe the first coherent and very successful countermodel to suburbia and motopia. The latter are futureless forms of settlement. The functional zoning of cities is driving the daily mobilization of the entire population in the performance of everyday tasks.

This enforced geographic segregation is responsible for the catastrophically global wastage of time, land and energy of modern societies. It is profoundly unsustainable.

The only way forward is to design integrated settlement policies on national and continental scales that will promote the ‘walkable city’, both with regard to walkable distances and to walkable building heights.

Le Corbusier corrected. His colossal ambitions as a reformer of urbanism, his Radiant City Project was and remains a functional, formal, social, political, energetic, ecological insanity. His 'monumentalization' of suburban sprawl is unsustainable in ecological and human terms.

Life is a wiggle, and death a straight line. Imola (Italy) was a Roman foundation which got shaken into life by generations of pushing and pulling. (Plan of Imola's gridded pattern with it's Main Street wiggle by Leonardo da Vinci)

Luxembourg proved to me that a large town can be a family of small towns and that work and life, education and commerce could be successfully integrated within each quarter. Before functional zoning and mechanical transport took command, large towns had to be ordered that way.

I’d love your feedback, but you’ll need 10min. I had the opportunity to share my thoughts with @TEDxWilmington , because I think, as a #community, we can do much better. There is a massive #inequity in how we approach making great places.Let’s fix that. youtu.be/7UwxP-RoEus

The commercial areas of Paseo Cayalá, the boulevards, streets and squares of these residential neighborhoods are paved with cobbles and flagstones to reinforce the primacy of the pedestrian over the automobile.

I am not a polemicist by nature or character. I woke up to it when I saw my home-town, a jewel of architecture, urbanism and landscaping, wrecked by false ideas of modernity. The beautiful townhouse I grew up in is replaced by an elephantine and vulgar office complex.

Sustainability is hence the much abused and ill-used term. The so called “ecological” suburb, the “green” skyscraper, green-transport, - food, -fuel, green-everything, as all zero carbon projects, are lies. They are no more possible than the perpetuum mobile.

The only truly ecological city is the mixed-use, -scale, -income traditional city, using local resources of materials, techniques and crafts for its construction, use and maintenance.
