READ: Over 163 Ateneo faculty members called on the Ateneo administration to be more transparent and accountable following the deaths of student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
In the statement released today, June 11, the educators questioned whether University regulations and due process were followed in the “team-building activity,” and they also sought clarification on whether parents and guardians had been informed, and what safety measures were in place.
Moreover, they asked whether Head Coach Tab Baldwin and Team Manager Christopher Quimpo’s “leave” are equivalent to a preventive suspension, which they say is “standard operating procedure” in these cases.
The faculty also pressed the administration to explain how it intends to conduct a “independent and impartial investigation” and what measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

PANOORIN: Sa drone footage ng Aurora MDRRMO, makikita ang pag-ahon sa mga katawan nina Rene Baterbonia at Divine Adili, mga manlalaro ng Ateneo Men's Basketball Team na nasawi matapos malunod sa dagat sa Dipaculao, Aurora habang nasa isang “team-building” activity.
Makikita rin sa footage na walang anumang pabigat o “weights” na nakakabit sa mga nasawing manlalaro, taliwas sa mga kumakalat na ulat. Nauna nang pinabulaanan ng Aurora Provincial Police Office ang naturang impormasyon batay sa mga sinumpaang salaysay ng mga rumespondeng MDRRMO personnel at mga lifeguard ng resort.
Ayon sa pulisya, wala silang nakitang indikasyon ng foul play sa insidente. Wala rin anilang nakitang mga pasa sa katawan ng mga biktima nang maiahon sila mula sa dagat.
Gayunman, sinabi ng ina ni Baterbonia na nakapansin siya ng mga pasa sa bandang leeg, likod, kamay, at paa ng kaniyang anak nang personal niyang makita ang mga labi nito.
Batay sa certificate of postmortem examination na hawak ng pulisya, “asphyxia by drowning” ang sanhi ng pagkamatay ni Baterbonia, habang hinihintay pa ang resulta ng pagsusuri sa mga labi ni Adili.

Rovelyn Baterbonia, the mother of the late Ateneo Blue Eagles player Rene Clert Baterbonia, broke down in tears as she addressed her son's teammates during their visit to his wake.
She recalled how Rene once promised to bring home a UAAP MVP award—and, one day, even a PBA MVP trophy.
"Pag ako makarating sa UAAP, bibigyan talaga kita ng UAAP MVP o kung mapagbigyan na siya, PBA MVP. Kasi 'yan ang pangarap natin," Rovelyn said, recalling her son's words.
Rovelyn also reminded the players about the value of respect, a principle she said their family has always upheld.
"Mahirap kami pero malaki ang respeto. Mayaman man o mahirap, may yaman kami sa respeto. Kaya sana maintindihan niyo 'yung respeto na sinasabi ko," she said.
