Who were the church fathers? The term “church fathers” describes the men who led the church in the first few centuries after the death of the apostles. Jesus entrusted the mission of preaching the gospel to his disciples, most of whom became missionaries (or apostles, as we call them) after he ascended into heaven. Author Gerald Bray talks more about this in a recent excerpt over on Practicing Theology. Visit today to learn more about these fathers of our faith.
J. R. R. Tolkien was many things: English Catholic, father and husband, survivor of two world wars, Oxford professor, and author. But he was also considered a theologian. What, though, of Tolkien’s insistence that he is neither theologian nor preacher and that he is unqualified to speak theologically? In Tolkien Dogmatics Author Austin M. Freeman inspects Tolkien’s entire corpus―The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and beyond―using his work as a window into his theology.

In Pursuit of Character, Matthew Arbo argues that we can learn how to live a good life by recovering the virtues that have guided Christians before us. Arbo reintroduces readers to the seven cardinal and theological virtues of prudence, temperance, fortitude, justice, faith, hope, and love. This formerly planned Lexham title is now released from @ReadBakerBooks and reminds us that pursuing virtue is good in itself, and by becoming virtuous we enrich our lives and those around us.

On Sunday morning, creeds articulate the truths that countless believers through the ages have likewise professed, and which fellow Christians around the world are also proclaiming on that day. Or when a creed is recited in the waters of baptism, each new believer, no matter their background, is embracing the same core truths about the mighty work of God. Verbal confession of creeds expresses the unity of the universal church.
