• Statement from Secretary of State for Education @GillianKeegan: Higher Education Reform
ALT Procedural Explanation: What is a ministerial statement?
Government ministers may make oral statements to Parliament which usually address major incidents, government policies or actions. These take place after oral questions and any granted urgent questions. After making a statement the minister responds to questions on its topic from MPs. An hour is allocated for this.
I am pleased to say that on the back of my formal complaint last week to the CEO of the Student Loan Company. It has has corrected the false and misleading information that has been on Gov . uk for two years (and has been complained about before).
Here's a comparison of the new and old...
Gov. uk is giving false and misleading information to students applying for loans and their parents – I'm calling for an urgent correction. Full info here... moneysavingexpert.com/news/2…
Talking about homelessness at the @Lighthouse_PG today with a delegate and remembered my dissertation 31 years ago. Young homelessness was on the rise. I fear a repeat especially with cost of living crisis and a lack of Government support.
Good to attend the @Lighthouse_PG meeting today to discuss topical HE issues, including cost of living challenges for students. Thanks to the team at @UEL_News for hosting.
NEW on Wonkhe: We've been waiting for it since 2021, and now primary legislation to bring about the Lifelong Loan Entitlement is here. David Kernohan runs down its content and asks what is still to do to make LLE a reality? @dkernohanbuff.ly/3jolMAd
We are delighted to be hosting the @Lighthouse_PG annual meeting today.
Exciting discussions with members from across the sector are making for an insightful and enjoyable day! #UEL125
So @officestudents just (quietly) released a report and a new set of dashboards. Included are data for care experienced students. I’m resting my back so let’s see what I can tell you from my phone. A geek🧵:
Normally OfS obsessed with outcomes over provision. This isn't even provision, its communication of it! And posits the M/H "solution" as exclusively extra curricular, and individual services based. It's like we've gone back 10 years in our understanding.

Assuming Will Quince keeps his old job, it seems likely that universities will be looked after for now by an Under-Secretary of State, whereas Michelle Donelan was a Minister of State, a member of the Privy Council, attended Cabinet and had a spad.
Important point. The Govt is now keen that quals originally not designed to lead to access to university do in fact lead to access to university and that universities publicise this fact. But have the quals been redesigned in light of their adjusted purpose?
But, can we please remember that originally DfE made it clear that T Levels were not designed primarily for university entry. It's a muddle tbh and a real concern for many admissions tutors who are trying to do the right thing (for students).
