Mensaje al Pueblo de Colombia en el Día de las Elecciones: Mañana, mientras millones de colombianos acuden a ejercer su derecho fundamental al voto, el mundo será testigo de la lucha por la democracia en una de sus formas más puras y hermosas. Nacido en Colombia, pero sin votar en estas elecciones por ser ciudadano estadounidense, me presento hoy ante ustedes con profunda humildad, gran respeto y una esperanza inquebrantable, como invitado y observador de este proceso histórico. Estas son SUS elecciones. La solemne decisión de quién liderará Colombia pertenece exclusivamente al pueblo colombiano, a nadie más. Ni a gobiernos ni ciudadanos extranjeros, ni a voces externas, ni a intereses corruptos, ni a criminales dentro o fuera de sus fronteras soberanas. Este principio inquebrantable constituye la esencia misma de la legitimidad democrática. Celebro la fortaleza de las instituciones democráticas de Colombia y la vital importancia de unas elecciones libres de intimidación, coacción o cualquier forma de interferencia. Cada ciudadano, ya sea de las vibrantes calles de Bogotá, los barrios históricos de Cartagena, las colinas de Antioquia o los confines del Pacífico y la Amazonía, es igual ante las urnas. Su voto tiene el mismo peso, independientemente de su situación económica o procedencia. En ese momento de marcar la papeleta, todos los colombianos son verdaderamente iguales, y esa igualdad es sagrada y poderosa. Colombia posee una sólida y orgullosa tradición de elecciones democráticas, forjada a través de casi dos siglos de desafíos, resiliencia y progreso. Durante casi doscientos años, los lazos de amistad, valores compartidos y respeto mutuo entre Estados Unidos y Colombia han perdurado, arraigados en un compromiso común con la libertad y la autodeterminación. Honramos esa alianza perdurable hoy respetando plenamente la soberanía de Colombia y la voluntad de su pueblo. Estas son, sin duda, unas elecciones cruciales. Las decisiones que tomen mañana tendrán un gran peso histórico y moldearán el destino de las generaciones venideras. Sin embargo, en este momento solemne y de reflexión, mantengo una profunda esperanza. El futuro de Colombia puede ser más brillante que nunca, lleno de prosperidad, seguridad, unidad y oportunidades, guiado por la sabiduría, el coraje y la voluntad colectiva de su pueblo. Agradezco al Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE) el honor de invitarme a presenciar este momento crucial. Su compromiso con la transparencia y la integridad electoral fortalece el tejido democrático de la nación. Que Dios bendiga al pueblo colombiano. Que acudan a las urnas con la mente clara, el corazón firme y la profunda conciencia de la responsabilidad histórica que conlleva su mandato. Su futuro está en sus manos, y así debe ser. Con respeto, esperanza y profunda admiración.

This is an interesting example of possibly smart politics and bad policy… that could become better policy thanks to the politics… but that’s a narrow path @j_fishback Why? People love free money. A large share of taxpayers pay little to no net income tax, so when they get the check it’s not a “tax cut” but a “tax credit”… aka… a transfer payment or welfare check. Not my favorite. Plus, DOGE won’t close the deficit, so every nickel of the “doge dividend” will be borrowed money. Borrowing less is still borrowing. Borrow less less is two steps forward one step back. One off tax credits also don’t change the savings and investment decisions. So it’s not a reform. That’s also sub optimal. BUT… Any spending cuts at all have been politically impossible. So there could be a world in which this kind of “dividend” helps to engender broader support for cuts. Maybe. The problem is that it’s also an incentive to further inflate spending, then “cut” from the higher level through a given-away. That’s the policy equivalent of doubling your sticker price, than marking it with a 40% discount… it’s still 10% more expensive than before. AND… I’m not convinced that checks today will buy any good will for, say, raising the SS retirement age for those under 50, or trimming back other popular spending. I’m always in favor of cutting tax rates. Always. Every time. Higher taxes is never a path to debt reduction because DC instantly spends it all. Screw DC. Starve it into a debt crisis. But do it with permanent rate cuts. Love ya James. Congrats on getting this idea to pop. It’s clever. It might be a counter-productive idea. Or maybe it’s political genius. Or maybe both.
