📈 The rising prevalence of obesity
The world is facing an unprecedented rise in obesity rates, especially among children and adolescents.
Here are some key stats:
👧 Girls: Obesity rates have skyrocketed from 1.7% in 1990 to 6.9% in 2022, affecting 65.1 million girls globally.
👦 Boys: Obesity rates in boys have risen from 2.1% to 9.3%, with 94.2 million boys now living with obesity.
👶 Under 5s: 37 million children under the age of 5 are living with overweight, with the majority in South Asia, East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Pacific.
For adolescents and children aged 5-19, the numbers are even more alarming:
🧒 159 million children and adolescents are living with obesity. Obesity rates have quadrupled worldwide since 1990.
Among adults, the crisis is just as severe:
🌍 878 million adults are now living with obesity, quadrupling in total since 1990.
👨👩The prevalence among women has more than doubled, and for men, it has nearly tripled between 1990 and 2022.
❗️ This isn’t just about numbers – these rising rates are a call to action. We need urgent, coordinated global efforts to halt and reverse this trend.
