Machrihanish Golf Club, 1876 Charles Hunter/Old Tom Morris, Kintyre, Scotland Machrihanish Golf Club is defined by a remarkably pure expression of traditional Scottish links golf. Rather than being heavily engineered, the course feels discovered within the landscape — a hallmark of the great natural links associated with Old Tom Morris. The routing, landforms, and strategic demands are all driven primarily by the dunes, coastline, wind, and rumpled ground of the Kintyre peninsula. It is often described as one of the least altered championship links courses in the world. The fairways ripple naturally through existing dune corridors with very little evidence of artificial shaping. Greens appear to emerge organically from the terrain rather than sitting atop constructed platforms. Old Tom Morris himself reportedly remarked that the land was “designed by the Almighty for playing golf,” reflecting how perfectly the terrain suited links architecture. It is a tradition out and back links course starting out by what is famously considered the best opening hole in golf. The front nine takes you through the massive dune landscape and the back returns you to more traditional flatter inland links golf. The challenge comes from the wind you’ll most definitely experience, devilish pot bunkers that seem to sneak up in many of the landing zones, and green complexes that demand second shot accuracy. Machrihanish sometimes gets talked over when discussing the great courses of the country. But it shouldn’t be. It is everything you’d want in Scottish links golf experience. It was one I truly enjoyed and was made even better strolling the fairways with my friend @LinksRobbie giving me personal tour and history of his beloved club/course.

The 1st at Machrihanish is widely regarded as the finest opening hole in the world. Aptly named “Battery,” this stout par-4 begins with a tee shot over the beach which is best described as either “thrilling” or “terrifying,” depending on your state of mind on a given day. Although it appears that there are miles of safety to the right, four perfectly placed pot bunkers, invisible from the tee, lurk waiting to gobble overly conservative tee shots. Well hit tee shots that find the rumpled fairway will offer up an approach that can vary by 5 or 6 clubs depending on the day’s wind strength and direction. The green, like most at Machrihanish, is terrific, presenting an infinite array of puzzles and challenges best solved not just with talent, but creativity.
