I’m proud to have been involved in the new State of Nature report, but the results are grim and they reveal how very far we are from ending the biodiversity crisis.

OH MY GOD!! These tiny but stunning springtails are Fasciosminthurus quinquefasciatus, a species never before seen in the UK - and yet I found 30 on the Cornish coast yesterday! Question is, established introduction or overlooked native?? Given location I suspect the latter

This is maddening and there’s no excuse for it.
This is so bitterly disappointing, and stinks of pathetic, "can't do" lobbying by a sector that's had 30 years to prepare I sometimes wonder if the UK Horticulture sector is one of the least innovative, most dinosaur-like sectors in existence wildlifetrusts.org/news/uk-g…

Heartwarming to find this cosy nest with hair from our two Highland cattle. Long white hairs are Tiree’s, as she has blonde highlights, while ginger fluff could be from Tiree or Cava. Any ideas what bird species? (9cm across, found in gorse hedge) #biodiversity #heilancoos

My first guess would be yellowhammer, as the hedgerows are bursting with them. Is that likely from the size, material etc?

Relevant to all of us - not just journalists - who are seeking to tell stories that engage people in the biodiversity and climate crises.
Promoting #climate news is hard. Telling stories that resonate with many different audience is important. Excited to read this report to see if I can learn how to improve how I report climate issues. #scicomm #biodiversity #AcademicChatter

One of those stats you read 3 times to be sure you didn’t misread it. Pheasants (the 10s of millions released each year to be shot) make up half of all British birds, by weight, in August. Mind-blowing.

Just looking back at this paper link.springer.com/article/10… by @TimBlackburn66 and @KevinJGaston for a tutorial I'm running on Monday - this really is an extraordinary figure isn't it? 49% of Britain's bird biomass in August is pheasant.
