Freedom must include reading. Today we reflect on Freedom Day, but freedom without literacy is incomplete. The 2023 National Reading Barometer shows a country trying to read, but struggling to access what it needs. 63% of households do not own a single book and only 32% of adults read books regularly. What does freedom mean if children grow up without books? Across South Africa, NGOs are stepping in where the system falls short, bringing stories into homes, classrooms, and communities. But they cannot do it alone. If we are serious about equality, education, and opportunity, government must urgently invest in and partner with literacy organisations already doing the work.
