🇨🇦 Here are 3 stats every Canadian should learn about the flow of fentanyl, illegal immigration, and guns at the Canada-US border (instead of writing hot takes or hating on our country). Pls share.
Spoiler alert for the Canadians claiming Canada is the primary problem - we are not. Still, we can do better, and we tried.
In December, the Canadian government announced a $1.3B federal border security plan to help.
So, as you will read below, maybe Canada doesn't deserve these tariffs based on the data OR maybe it's not about the border. 🤔
1. FENTANYL
"While fentanyl trafficking is undoubtedly a critical issue, the data does not support the claim that Canada is a primary source of the drug entering the U.S.
In Fiscal Year 2024, USCBP seized 21,148 pounds of fentanyl at the southwest border, mostly smuggled from Mexico. In contrast, only 43 pounds were intercepted at the northern border. This means that less than 1% of all fentanyl seizures occurred at the U.S.-Canada border." -FORBES
2. GUNS
"Chief Fordy told the BBC that in 2023, 90% of handguns recovered after violent crimes in Ontario - Canada's most populous province - were traced back to the US...
The number of guns used in Canadians crimes that can be traced back to the US has risen in the last 10 years, he added, forcing American and Canadian police officers to increasingly work together to stop these guns from coming in." - BBC
3. ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
"With regard to Canada at least, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data for Fiscal Year 2024 tells a different story. In that period, Border Patrol apprehended 23,721 people who illegally crossed the U.S.-Canada border, representing just 1.5% of nationwide Border Patrol apprehensions. In contrast, at the U.S.-Mexico border, Border Patrol reported more than 1.5 million apprehensions in the same year.
In 2023, the last year for which we have statistics at the moment, more people crossed illegally from the United States into Canada than in the opposite direction." - FORBES
