I believe that some of our best innovators and thinkers are so traumatized by our system that they are underemployed or incarcerated. Our world needs the out-of-box thinkers to be unleashed. And I never want them to feel like they are being held back by not being able to record their thoughts through writing or learn something they need/want to learn through reading.

I think I'm so clever: I believe I've found a way for my dyslexic son to not only graduate from hs with a diesel tech certification but also with an associate's degree! He can get school credit for his side business and attend class around his schedule. All paid for by various grants and state funding. I love Idaho.

Several years ago I offered to volunteer in the local elem school with any struggling readers. This was in Feb. They told me that they were prepping for tests which were the first week of March and after that they didn’t need to learn anything new! It isn’t “summer slide” when 7-8 months of the year students aren’t learning anything new!

Math skills affecting college courses too: The Orals Practice Video required much more work than a 5 question open-book/note test that we could retake 3x to get the score we wanted. But the quiz was worth 10x the grade.

A client taught me how to draw an anime character…🥰 Among dyslexic students, many are amazing artists. I am not. I often remind them that languages come easily for me and that I need practice in drawing. This deescalates the emotional impact of needing literacy intervention.

Trying to create an assessment app for the hs class next year. I'm determined to have progress monitoring data available to me regularly. The key to AI is the quality of the idea and ability to meet the user's needs. How do we encourage these skills in students?!

Family came in town for my graduation. ❤️ I smiled at my nephew with ASD eating breakfast. But just imagine if this was every meal, every day with homework, deadlines, and therapy appts. This is a reminder to pause before complaining about parents whose battles are fierce.

I just can’t wait for the day when we have hundreds of thousands of SLP agents that get together at the end of the day and compare notes of what is really working to shift the needle in SLP! Then they can give me critiques on my sessions and real data. Sigh.

Reading “Thank You” notes from the high schoolers: She now knows that “big words are just small words put together”. Sigh. If only someone had shown her that before her Junior year in high school! #untilallcanread

Got my hood… Time to diagnose dyslexia and DLD and teach students to read, write, and spell! More importantly, time to help them believe in themselves! 🙌 #slp

Attended a local Shakespeare play with a cast of 9 homeschool teens, 4 of which are dyslexic! The rigor of memorizing Elizabethan English did wonders for my former literacy clients! I almost didn’t recognize them! Teens can do hard things if we let them!

And my heart burst with pride when my own dyslexic son laughed at the comedy! Thank you @socraticexp for opening up my son's world to higher levels of language through Socratic discussion of classic texts!

SLP clinic today: Practiced adjective elaboration in sentences to expand descriptive language- client used ocean blue, midnight blue, sky blue to describe the shirts in the pics. Make sure to model complex sentences: The man wearing a midnight blue shirt is holding a mirror.

My last day with the high school students as I start my internship in SLP. The teachers gave me a “thank-you” package. These students don’t know how lucky they are to have their teachers fighting for them! We have amazing training coming up and will prep for next year! 💪

The hs students complained about the field trip that their teacher set up for them. She even got funding for lunch out! But we saw a medical robot that gives birth for the RN students, a robot dog, and the tech shops. I saw their heads spinning with ideas of possible futures.

My son started saving for a truck when he was 11 yo working on a mini-farm for $5 an hour. He finally saved enough and paid cash - no power windows, manual transmission. He’s finding the joy in his accomplishment, and it is the most-satisfying reward as a mom.

Ever notice how some teens can read… but struggle to explain what they think? A lot of homeschool curricula don’t build real argumentation or discussion skills. My cofounder Max and I are building Reading Rooms, a tool to help parents teach their 7th–12th graders high-level literacy. We’ve been working with mentors from Alpha Fellowship and modeling this after elite private school curricula. Looking for homeschool moms to test it: • Free access • Direct support DM me if you're interested.
