When communists did brutalism, it reflected their spartan utilitarian vision for civilisation. No bourgeoisie opulence, only hard military production to defend communism giving people minimum standard of dignified living. The Spartans hated gold, and only transacted in pieces of iron.
Lib-leftists pushing brutalism in the West was just pure wordcel LARP, OTOH. It was unaccompanied by the necessary socio-political will to sublimate the individual for the collective.
They tried a half-arsed Keynesian post-war social democracy until the oil shock, and then pivoted to social justice in the face of deindustrialisation (trade unions were a hotbeds of populist nativists). Others from the post-war Lib-Leftist camp pivoted to Neoconservatism after the 1973 Arab-Israeli wars — socially liberal, but foreign policy hawks for Israel.

Its incredible. No matter how “assimilated” you are, how “patriotic” and committed to the “All-American” way of life, you grew up with your own special mythology about how YOUR PEEPOO were oppressed by other ethnics. Only difference is whether you’re the Muslim or they are.
