Every “raw” almond sold in the US has been steam-treated or chemically fumigated since 2007, under a USDA mandate. One approved fumigant, propylene oxide, is classified as a probable carcinogen and is banned in the EU, Canada, and Mexico. The “raw” label remains legal because the USDA redefined the treatment as “pasteurization.”

Tapatio, the family-owned hot sauce founded in 1971, has been sold to private equity firm Highlander Partners. The Saavedra family will retain a minority stake, with Highlander citing plans to expand into new markets and distribution channels. Private equity acquisition of legacy food brands often precedes recipe changes, cost-cutting, and loss of founding identity.

The USDA quietly cancelled roughly $1B in contracts routing locally grown food from small farms to schools and food banks. A Civil Eats investigation found the cuts left thousands of small farms without buyers, pushing some young farmers out of agriculture entirely. Local food infrastructure doesn’t rebuild overnight.

An Oregon district granted $300,000 to nearly two dozen small farms near Portland after federal funding was cut. The $300K is a fraction of the $2M those farms previously received from the federal government. Local food systems depend on consistent public investment to survive.

Morgan Freeman converted his 124-acre Mississippi ranch into a honeybee sanctuary, importing hives and planting bee-friendly forage throughout the property. Global bee populations have declined sharply due to pesticide exposure, habitat loss, and disease. Bees pollinate roughly one-third of the world’s food supply.

An EPA-certified lab found phthalates in all 11 avocado oils tested, with levels reaching up to 56,808 parts per billion. Phthalates are plastic chemicals linked to hormone disruption, fertility issues, and certain cancers. No federal limit exists for phthalates in food oils.

Two activists face up to 6 years in prison for removing sick baby goats from Vera Goat Dairy in Stratford, CA. A vet confirmed the animals were emaciated with respiratory infections after investigators found an illegal animal pile on-site. The farm supplies Meyenberg, sold as “Certified Humane” at Whole Foods, Sprouts, and Walmart.

Pasturebird’s Automated Range Coop uses solar power to rotate a floorless barn to a fresh section of pasture each day, with no manual labor. Chickens get continuous access to pesticide-free grass while their manure enriches the soil as they move. Manure-in-motion is a core regenerative agriculture practice that rebuilds land instead of depleting it.

Tom Brady just launched Good Nut, an organic coconut water brand created in partnership with Gopuff, emphasizing no added sugars, no artificial sweeteners, and certified organic sourcing. The coconuts are sourced from Vietnam, a major global supplier of bulk organic coconut water. Clean labels and celebrity backing do not always mean small supply chains.

Hiroki Tomiyasu is a self-taught broccoli farmer in Japan who accessed idle, abandoned farmland through a land restoration program and built his operation from scratch. Instead of buying proprietary greenhouse systems costing tens of thousands, he used AI-generated code to automate temperature and airflow. He independently connected scheduling, labor, inputs, and sensor data into one unified system. A farmer who codes is harder to extract from.

EWG tested 54,344 conventional produce samples and found nearly 75% had detectable pesticide residue, with 264 different pesticides identified. For the Dirty Dozen subset, pesticides were detected on about 96% of samples across over 203 distinct chemicals. More than 60% of Dirty Dozen samples contained pesticides that also qualify as PFAS-class forever chemicals. Washing does not remove this.

The average American man now carries about 28% body fat and the average woman about 40%, compared to the average pig which sits between 15% and 25%. Experts point to ultra-processed food consumption and sedentary lifestyles as the primary drivers. Americans are now, by body composition, fatter than the animals we raise for food.

A new study found microplastics in Nestle and Danone baby food pouches, with some containing over 11,000 microplastic particles each. Research increasingly links microplastic exposure to inflammation, hormonal disruption, and developmental concerns, with infants considered especially vulnerable. The packaging is the contamination source.

Florida governor candidate James Fishback is pledging to ban data centers across all 67 counties by blocking county commissions from approving them. He says the move is aimed at protecting farmland, water supplies, and electric bills from data center development. A gubernatorial candidate is making farmland protection a centerpiece issue.

Two women are suing Costco, alleging the rotisserie chicken’s “no preservatives” label is misleading. The product contains carrageenan and mono and diglycerides, both FDA-approved additives some researchers have linked to increased cancer risk. A “no preservatives” label and a clean ingredient list are not the same thing.

Carbon monoxide treatment preserves tuna’s bright red color, making it appear fresher than it is. The FDA considers it safe, but the practice is banned in over 30 countries including Japan, Canada, and the EU over concerns it masks spoilage. The fish looks fresh. That does not mean it is.

Records show JD Vance invested tens of thousands of dollars in AcreTrader, a platform that allows investors to buy fractional shares of American farmland, while publicly positioning himself as a champion of small farmers. Critics argue platforms like AcreTrader drive up farmland prices, making it harder for working farmers to buy land. Supporting farmers and investing in the financialization of their land are not the same thing.

A new study links high ultra-processed food consumption to a 50% greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. Americans currently get more than half their daily calories from UPFs. Researchers identify shifting toward minimally processed whole foods as one of the most impactful steps for long-term health. The leading cause of death in America is largely diet-driven.

Coca-Cola is estimated to produce about 110 billion plastic bottles per year, roughly 200,000 every minute. Plastic pollution is now detected in human blood, Arctic ice, and the lungs of newborn babies. Cows are repeatedly cited as environmental villains by the same companies responsible for some of the world’s worst plastic pollution. Ask who benefits from that narrative.
