At this time, there is no impact to Long Beach neighborhoods, beaches, or recreational waters. City teams are also assisting with local hotel accommodations for evacuated Garden Grove residents needing support. We will continue to monitor conditions and share updates as they become available. I am heartbroken by the tragic accident at one of our partners’ shelter sites that claimed the life of a longtime worker and injured two others. A man who showed up to work to make an honest living lost his life in a sudden and devastating accident. Our hearts are with his loved ones, his coworkers, the injured workers, and the entire Rescue Mission community as they process this unimaginable loss. While the investigation is still in its early stages and many questions remain, this tragedy is also a painful reminder that workplace safety matters in every setting and for every worker. Right now, our focus is on supporting those impacted and their families and ensuring the injured workers receive the care and support they need. We extend our deepest condolences, prayers, and wishes for healing and strength in the difficult days ahead.

We are heartbroken by the horrific shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Acts of violence rooted in hate and fear have no place in our communities. Long Beach is a city that values diversity, inclusion, and the freedom to worship safely and peacefully. We have been in contact with leaders in San Diego to offer our support and are keeping all those impacted in our thoughts. We condemn this act in the strongest terms and will continue standing alongside our Muslim neighbors against hate in all its forms.

For years, Big Bang on the Bay event has brought our community together and supported local nonprofits, with no documented harm to coastal resources. This decision by the California Coastal Commission to block fireworks is difficult to understand and feels out of touch. It leaves no practical options for 2026, effectively canceling a long-standing tradition. It also risks increasing illegal fireworks activity by removing a safe, organized alternative. The inconsistency is hard to ignore. Fireworks continue elsewhere along the coast, including at SeaWorld, while Long Beach is told no. We’ve been made aware of a fake Instagram account impersonating Mayor Rex Richardson and sending messages asking for cryptocurrency investments and personal information. This is a scam. The Mayor and the City of Long Beach will never request money, crypto, or sensitive information through direct messages. Do not engage, do not share information, and report the account to Instagram immediately. We have reported the account and are contacting Meta regarding the issue.

Honoring that legacy means listening to survivors, supporting them, and ensuring accountability where harm has occurred. These reports are deeply troubling, and we take them seriously. While the information is still emerging, we will engage our city’s leadership and community in a thoughtful process to consider how we recognize the farmworker movement in our public spaces, holidays, and civic life—including reviewing the naming of public facilities—in a way that is responsive to this moment and grounded in our values.

Last month, the Long Beach City Council was one of the first major U.S. cities to formally call for the removal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to hold the federal administration accountable for the chaos and harm they have inflicted on diverse immigrant communities like ours. We must always reject unjust policies and decisions that create fear in our neighborhoods. Today’s news reflects a growing groundswell of concern from mayors, cities, and community leaders across the country who have been calling for justice and accountability. But this moment does not end the work. Cities like Long Beach must continue speaking out, standing with our residents, and pushing for policies that protect the dignity and safety of everyone who calls our community home.
