I had two hours to kill while I waited for my son, so I went to see Tuner. I knew nothing about the film. It was really enjoyable, including a great comic turn from Dustin Hoffman. Their idea of what music a modern composer would write was embarrassing, but otherwise a solid 4/5.
The Black Country Living Museum in Dudley now has a wonderful recreation of a 1960s public library, but why did they have to spoil it with nonsense like this?
As an experiment, I posted the same joke on Twitter/X and Threads. On X, I got no response at all. On Threads, I got 609 likes and 115 comments. Are the people on Threads more easily pleased, or is there an algorithm on X that doesn't like me?
If Starmer goes, that will mean that 80% of the last five PMs have been kicked out by their MPs. Is this good for democracy? I don't like Starmer, but I don't trust jittery MPs who are out to save their own skins. It feels as if being a PM is an impossible job now.
I'm in Serbia and took a photo of this, as it seemed so Incongruous. I have now learned that 'Only Fools and Horses' was one of Yugoslavia's most popular series and even today, Del Boy is a popular figure. Life is full of surprises.
I'm no expert, but I would have thought that if you buy a high street chain that's been slowly dying for 25 yrs and make very few changes, except for a name that everyone knows is fake, you haven't got a great future. How was anyone persuaded to invest in this absurd enterprise?
I had a technical problem yesterday and phoned a helpline. A helpful, very young-sounding man talked me through it. But every time pressed a button correctly, he said "Amazing" (and not in a sarcastic way). This is clearly a new thing, designed to torture me in my final years.
God, Southampton is a shocker. Where the Luftwaffe failed, the postwar town planners finished the job for them. It's totally carcentric, the station is a mile from the centre and some of the people look like the results of a failed experiment. It's been a sobering experience.
I've just realised that it's now 10 years since David Bowie died. I still fondly remember my late mother telling me the news:
"That Laughing Gnome man's died. There's 13 pages about him in the paper. 13! I can't think of anything he's done."
I watched 'The Stranger' this evening (or was it yesterday. I'm not really sure) and was very impressed. The cinematography was stunning and Benjamin Voisin was superb, but I struggled to accept him as Meursault, as my image from reading the book was of a nerdier-looking man.
