The league isn’t ready for Drake Maye and AJ Brown…. What a throw. What a catch. (🎥 @Patriots)

Rob Gronkowski on #Patriots OC Josh McDaniels comparing him and AJ Brown: “AJ Brown uses his body to get open as well, and that’s how I got open a lot. I was never really running by guys. I used my body, blocked out guys, and Tom [Brady] will put the ball where only I can go up. And that’s the same with AJ Brown. That’s probably what Josh McDaniels sees in him… AJ Brown’s always open because he’s such a big body guy and he’s got great hands.” (🎥 @UpAndAdamsShow)

One factor behind #Patriots rookie DE Gabe Jacas’ absence is that he is not being given a standard “participation agreement” by the team, per @MikeReiss. “Most draft picks receive such an agreement, which states that if they were to sustain an injury prior to signing their first NFL contract, the team would still be obligated to sign him to a contract based on the slot he was drafted.” According to Reiss, along with Jacas’ hamstring injury during the predraft process, two sources from different NFL teams said their staffs passed Jacas on physical exams, though both flagged a labral tear in his shoulder that could “eventually require medical attention” — one of the sources also noted a stress fracture in his foot that could “worsen over time.” “But a source familiar with Jacas' recovery said he underwent a knee procedure that was described as a ‘clean-up.’ It is not known whether something happened after Jacas' physical exam and subsequent recheck at the combine, or when the Patriots had him in for a predraft visit the week of April 20, and that information wasn't disclosed to the team.” Messy, messy, messy…

The hope is #Patriots rookie DE Gabe Jacas will be ready for training camp as his medical procedure shouldn’t threaten his availability for the 2026 season, per @MikeReiss. Reiss adds that Jacas, who hasn’t been spotted since rookie minicamp, hasn’t been with the team since May.

Follow up: The Patriots don't plan to sign tryout punter Devin Bale at this time, but could revisit down the road, per a source.
Tryout punter Devin Bale (Arkansas), donning No. 6, loosens up at mandatory minicamp.

#Patriots DE Gabe Jacas is the lone second-round pick from the 2026 NFL Draft class who has not signed their rookie contract. The Bengals recently signed second-round pick Cashius Howell, leaving just Jacas unsigned. Such a strange situation…

#Patriots WR AJ Brown spoke glowingly of QB Drake Maye after practice: “The talent speaks for itself. He can make any throw. But, I think what’s more impressive to me is that he knows what he’s doing. To be that young and to understand the defense, and to understand every little check, the hots, the blitz, all those things, so young and so fast it’s very impressive. And so, I really admire that. He knows what he’s talking about. He demands everybody else to know as well. And he’s a true leader. He’s a true leader of men and it’s crazy to see at a young age. He’s a true leader of men.” (🎥 @ByMarkDaniels)

#Patriots WR Kayshon Boutte did not participate in team drills today, per @mikekadlick. Boutte participated fully to begin minicamp, so the sudden change on the last day of practice is notable.

Practice was scheduled to go until about 2:50 but ended abruptly after Bradyn Swinson collided with Drake Maye after Maye completed a pass to AJ Brown. Both players on the ground momentarily. Maye appears to be OK. Swinson seemed to try to explain himself in the aftermath.

Carlton Davis on the #Patriots secondary: “Coach always says stay away from predictions and stuff but, I just wanna say that the confidence is high. It’s really high. I want us to be the strength of the defense.” Davis says Kevin Byard has brought more confidence as well.

DeMario Douglas says #Patriots OC Josh McDaniels wants him to be more “savvy” when running routes. “He’ll say [be] more savvy. Go out there and don’t do what I see [on a piece of paper]. Go out there and add my swagger to it. He believes in me, and I appreciate him for that.”

#Patriots LG Alijah Vera-Tucker on Drake Maye’s leadership: “I think Drake’s a natural leader. We’ve seen that… Not only being close to winning the MVP, but also leading the team to the Super Bowl. Seeing how he carries himself in the huddle, I think it’s really cool to see.”
