Scott Loss's lab at Oklahoma State University studying ecology of global change - climate change, wildlife mortality, invasive species & vector-borne diseases
I'm excited to share our new review paper in @ESAFrontiers showcasing how #CitizenScience programs around the world are advancing science, education & policy on the global issue of bird-window collisions!

With thanks to @LossLabOSU for the heavy lifting to organize and set up, we got to do that cool thing this week that the #students will never, ever forget.
[mist-netting and #banding of wild #birds conducted through multiple layers of authorization] #OKState
ALT Two white guys standing in front of a card table that is crowded with bird banding supplies. One guy is holding a bird and the other is pointing to a datasheet on which measurements from the bird will be entered. Judging from their hats, the guy with the bird has been to Ireland at some point, and the tall guy is a Milwaukee Brewers fan. Photo by Clay Billman.
ALT Photo by Clay Billman. Against a backdrop of smartweed, a Gray Catbird hangs in the pocket of a fine, mesh net used for catching wild birds. The catbird is dark, slaty gray with black cap, bill, eyes, and legs. It is upside-down and the rusty undertail coverts are visible.

Welcome to OSU @n_a_gilbert!!
And here's a good story. We had our first meet-up to talk shop planned for today. Instead, we found and chased a Bronzed Cowbird (the first record for eastern Oklahoma - pics below) & still managed to talk some shop in the meantime!
Thrilled to share that I am joining the Department of Integrative Biology at Oklahoma State University as an assistant professor! Very excited for this next chapter!
Stillwater, Oklahoma tornado today. Luckily it didn't touch down until the storm had moved to the north over rural areas. @sara_loss got this pic of the tornado after we emerged from shelter and as it moved safely away from town
We're proud of our undergrad researchers presenting their projects at the OSU undergrad research symposium this week - John Ternes (mentored by Riley Lawson) and Aryanna North & Addie Galante (mentored by @HollyTodaro)!

The Reichert lab is hiring! Seeking a postdoc to work on NSF CAREER funded project on behavioral energetics of calling in treefrogs. See here for more info: apply.interfolio.com/143528
This has a fairly quick turnaround time so please apply and spread the word
A new study suggests the time plants turn green is coming earlier in the spring than past averages - but migratory birds are not following suit.

Hundreds or more migratory birds like orioles, hummingbirds, Painted Buntings, tanagers, warblers & our state bird Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, will die each year colliding with this building. There are ways to avoid this @MattesonCapital@cityofokc@_Bricktown@oklahoma@ABCbirds
We had a "Little Sit" get together for our lab group this morning (like a mini version of a "Big Sit, which is an all day bird count at one location).
It was cold but fun and fueled by donuts and @SMBC bird-friendly coffee!
Check out this BBC podcast including an interview with Ellen Robertson and I about our @PNASNews study showing migrating birds aren't keeping up with earlier springs!
Bird collisions are something we can reduce but we don't. Our Opinion piece is simple: Enforce the Migratory Bird Treaty Act - Now! w/Andrew Farnsworth & @Kyle__Horton #LightsOutpnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.23…
We have an open postdoc position in our lab in collaboration with @CDuchardt lab - focusing on questions around wind energy, CRP, and big data on birds.
In person or remote work are both a possibility for this one. Please distribute!

If this looks familiar, we had a similar opening around a year ago, but the incumbent postdoc landed a great federal gig. In fact, our labs have recently been a great springboard/pipeline for postdocs into permanent federal science & policy positions!
