ALT REU in Computing for
Health and Well-being
Program Highlights
• $6,000 stipend
• On-campus housing and food
• Mentored research experience
• Research Bootcamp
• Career development workshops
• Fun social events and more
The Computer Science Department at the University of Iowa will conduct a
10-week summer research program funded by the National Science Foundation
(NSF). Our site is motivated by the considerable strain on the U.S. healthcare
system due to short-term challenges, such as those posed by the COVID-19
outbreak, and long-term trends, such as an aging U.S. population. Computer
scientists are in a unique position to help solve these and other problems in health
and well-being. Ten participants will join their faculty mentor's research group to
work on interdisciplinary projects.

Join us virtually at #CHI2022 for our workshop on Investigating Data Work Across Domains! Looking forward to reviewing submissions w/ my amazing co-organizers @khpine @najaholten @ginasue@MilagrosMiceli @alexlu3211 Leah Horgan, Claus Bossen, Yunan Chen, and Melissa Mazmanian!
Check out our paper based on a deployment study that examined people's food journaling preferences and strategies when under fewer constraints! lsilva.net/publications#acmdis2021
P1: How do people prefer to food journal? @Luke_ms & @daepstein find that people’s goals and input modalities influence how they describe foods, suggesting designers should aim to mitigate and leverage journaling variance youtube.com/watch?v=JYDQhGER…
Go check out our IMWUT paper on mapping personal informatics studies! It also resulted in a repository of the mapped papers and that I always use when looking for related works: personal-informatics.depstei…
Our upcoming #IMWUT@ubicomp paper maps areas of study in 523 personal informatics papers to point to opportunities for future research. Preprint available at depstein.net/assets/pubs/dep…, and you can browse the papers we tagged at personal-informatics.depstei…. A few key takeaways: (1/8)
