Gareth Roberts talking a load of old shite? Nothing changes
The BBC has binned its planned Doctor Who Christmas special and put the show 'out to tender'. This is a face-saving TV industry term for saying you've kicked an ailing show into the longest of grass, but don't want to enrage its most rabid fans. Good luck with that, chaps. Essentially it translates as 'Somebody please, please take this nightmare off our hands'. Itโ€™s like one of those Facebook ads you see for a dog that needs rehousing because it barks all night, gnaws on toddlers, and has no control of its bowels, but is a total sweetie, honestly. If by some bizarre quirk of circumstance I found myself the unwilling owner of the tender, I'd put Doctor Who on ice for at least a decade. Much has been written in the past few days about what happened to poor old Doctor Who, how the thing was revived in glory and then retoxified in shame. As a former writer on Doctor Who, I was actually in the room when some of the mistakes were made. I offer the following suggestions โ€“ in a reflective but constructive spirit โ€“ for anybody barmy enough to take the thing on. (And yes, I broke many of these 'rules' myself, but I know better now.) โœ๏ธ Gareth Roberts Article | spectator.com/article/twentyโ€ฆ

โ€œThe BBC tender quite a lot of things, and there is not a single show that they have tendered which hasnโ€™t gone on to have multiple series afterwardsโ€ฆ Every tender the BBC has ever done is for a show that they are absolutely committed to.โ€ โ€“ย @restisents on Who. ๐Ÿ”Š Link below. โฌ‡๏ธ

Iโ€™m confused. The Tories and Reform UK tell us Labour isnโ€™t taking the Russian threat seriously. Boris Johnson holidayed with senior FSB agents in Tuscany for decades, and the Welsh leader of Reform is in prison for collaborating with Russia. Where were these critics then?

๐Ÿšฉ Lord Heseltine sounds the air raid siren on Brexit crime: Brexit was a โ€œheinous crimeโ€ against the British people, led by Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage and their allies. โ€œNever have so few done so much damage to so many.โ€ The promises have turned to dust. A majority now wants to rejoin. The guilty men should hang their heads in shame.
๐Ÿšจ Michael Heseltine, โ€œWe must create a kind of United States of Europe. โฐ This is an important historical reminder, Churchillโ€™s vision after WW2 was that European nations had to find ways to bind themselves together so that nationalism, rivalry and the cycles of war that devastated the continent would not return. Heseltine is right, Brexit is a reversal of that post-war understanding: a retreat from collective European strength at a moment when the world is once again becoming more dangerous. โ€œProject Fear has become Project Here.โ€ The warnings about trade friction, reduced investment, barriers with our largest market and economic costs were dismissed as โ€œscaremongeringโ€, but those concerns are now reality pulling Britain into decline. On political accountability, Heseltine asks: where are the people who promised the benefits of Brexit now celebrating its success? If the promises had been fulfilled: lower migration, stronger growth, less bureaucracy, a more powerful Britain, one might expect the architects of the project to be loudly claiming victory. His final point: democracy is not a single frozen moment in 2016. The generations who will live longest with the consequences have the same democratic right to assess the outcome and decide their future direction. Whatever oneโ€™s view of Brexit, how can a medium-sized European country maintain prosperity, influence and security in a world increasingly shaped by continental-sized powers and geopolitical competition.

10 years ago my wife, the mum of our kids & the MP for Batley&Spen was killed by a far right extremist. At anniversaries I try to be optimistic about the future. But not this time. In the ten years since she was killed we have gone backwards & I fear our democracy is now at risk

Farageโ€™s policy of kicking people with indefinite leave to remain out of social housing and threatening them with deportation if they donโ€™t find private accommodation within three months is a truly despicable - and likely unworkable - idea.

Roy Hattersley was a giant of the Labour movement. Through decades of service, including as deputy leader and a minister, he never lost his belief in a more equal Britain. My thoughts are with his wife Maggie and his family.

The horrific scenes in North Belfast should not be used by English, right wing politicians to further their own ends. I donโ€™t ever remember them commenting on any of the other hellish things that community has experienced over the years.
