On this Thanksgiving weekend we want to give our thanks to everyone that works on roadways, including EMS, police and firefighting services, road construction and maintenance services, truck and delivery drivers, utility workers and others. Those that work on or beside roadways in Manitoba collectively contribute to a safer place for everyone.

This worker is out there maintaining our sewer systems, ensuring everything runs smoothly and safely behind the scenes. While they’re working hard to keep things flowing, it’s our job as drivers to stay alert and respect work zones. #SAFERoadsManitoba

During harvest season, farmers are moving larger equipment, often on public roadways. Slow down – these vehicles are often travelling much slower than the posted speed limit. Remember that farm equipment operators may not be able to see you when you are behind them. Stay a safe distance behind machinery. Farm equipment operators are entitled to use the road, and are not expected to pull over to the side of the road. This can be extremely dangerous for the operator. If the agricultural equipment pulls over too far onto the edge of the road it can cause the shoulder of the road to collapse, resulting in the equipment going into the ditch or rolling over. Be patient, stay alert, and give them the time and space needed on the roadway.

As kids head back to school, there will be more children, crossing guards and bus drivers on sidewalks and roadways. Everyone has a responsibility to keep children and those responsible for their transportation safe this school year. Use extreme caution when approaching school zones, obey the speed limit, and take extra care around parked cars, driveways and school buses. 🚸 #PracticeSafeDriving #SAFERoadsManitoba

On construction sites, busy streets or remote rural roads, these workers face unique challenges every day. As a driver, it's your responsibility to stay alert, slow down and give them the space they need to work safely. #SAFERoadsManitoba

The road is the workplace for a variety of first responders, including police services, EMS, firefighters and tow trucks. When you encounter emergency services on the side of the road, the Highway Traffic Act requires drivers must slow down to 40 km/h on roads where the speed limit is less than 80 km/h, and slow down to 60 km/h if the speed limit is 80 km/h or more. On multi-lane highways, drivers must also move to the next lane if able to do so safely and pass only if it is safe. This law protects those working on or near roadways from potential danger. Slow down and move over. It’s the law. #SAFERoadsManitoba

Heading out of town this long weekend? Here are five tips to keep you and others safe this weekend. 1. Don’t drink and drive. If you’re planning to drink make your safe driving plan in advance 2. Always obey the rules of the road, respect the posted speed limit, the rights of other drivers and drive according to road conditions. 3. Watch for increased presence of police services or EMS vehicles, and slow down and pull over when they have lights or sirens engaged. 4. Check your lights and turn signals before you leave to ensure you’re communicating with other drivers clearly on the road. 5. Avoid driver distractions. Distracted drivers can be just as dangerous as impaired drivers.

More than $165 million is being invested in road construction in Winnipeg alone this year, bringing more Manitobans onto busy roads to do their jobs.
