It has finally happened. HPAI has been confirmed for the first time in Antarctica. Two skuas found at Primavera Station (Arg) and analysed by molecular biologists of the Spanish polar programme. Fingers crossed for the penguins and the seals next season 😕🤞🐧

I'd like to take this opportunity to pivot to an iconic US endemic we *KNOW* still exists and that is *GOING TO BE EXTINCT* in the next 30 years if we don't do something drastic, fast. The Saltmarsh Sparrow:
The ivory-billed woodpecker, a bird presumed to be exctinct but one that has become a kind of Holy Grail for American birders, still exists, a new study suggests. But some scientists are skeptical, saying the evidence is on this “very poor video.” nyti.ms/3Ml9gvW

Here is a penguin knowledge test for you in honour of #WorldPenguinDay. This was taken on Cuverville Island, Antarctic Peninsula, in 2021. What's "out of place"? 📸Chloe Kaczvinsky

Old Blue Eyes - from a distance Brandt’s Cormorant is just like any other black cormorant around the coast. Get up close and those spectacular sapphire eyes and oil slick plumage make it a very special bird.

#Eels have piqued the curiosity of scientists for millenia. The #Sargasso is thought to be where they spawn but eels had never been tracked there. Until now. For the first time ever, we followed eels to their spawning grounds #europeaneel #anguilla 🐟 nature.com/articles/s41598-0…

Birds tell us that the health of our nation is at stake. The 2022 #StateOfTheBirds report finds that 70 species are on track to lose half their population in 50 years if no action is taken. We can reverse bird declines if we work together. StateoftheBirds.org #BirdsTellUs
