The Butler County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad responded to a residence after family members discovered a MK2 “pineapple style” hand grenade in a gun safe while going through the belongings of a deceased Army veteran who served during the Korean War.
The grenade appeared intact but had a plugged base indicating a non-military alteration. The device was safely secured by the Bomb Squad and will undergo further diagnostic examination, including X-ray, to determine its condition.
The Butler County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad is specially trained to respond to incidents involving explosive devices, military ordnance, and suspicious packages. Bomb technicians use specialized equipment and extensive training to safely identify, examine, and render devices safe in order to protect both the public and first responders.
Residents who encounter suspected military ordnance or explosive devices should never handle or move the item and should contact law enforcement immediately so trained bomb technicians can respond safely
