In the early 1980s, Ricky Gervais made a brief attempt to break into the pop music industry, releasing a few singles that saw limited success but failed to make a significant impact on the UK charts.

I've been going down the rabbit hole of vintage athletic typography this week. At Abercrombie we had a whole basement full of this stuff that we bought at flea markets, estate sales, etc over the years and I spent 100s of hours going through it... now I just do it on Pinterest. If you ever get a chance to visit a high-end vintage store, I highly recommend it. Seeing it in person lets you see all the little details of how the ink and appliquรฉ fade and distress over the years - photos don't really do it justice.

I was lucky enough to grow up on the edges of the Seattle/SF graffiti scene back in the 90s. It was the first time I saw suburban punk/skater kids (like me) getting seriously into graffiti - the same people I saw at shows were also crushing the city, which blew my mind. A crew called US from San Mateo county brought their signature style up to Seattle where the infamous BTM crew blew up (still around, worldwide, and still going hard). They had this really specific tagging style where they wrote the whole word without ever lifting up the marker, which I still love to this day. I never went nearly as hard as any of them, but a few of the early BTM guys went to my high school, and in hindsight that was a once in a lifetime chance to be around something really unique and special.

I made this font at Hollister, which we used a lot around 2011-2013. We made a lot of our own fonts back then, usually starting with some vintage sample like an old athletic jersey, then creating the missing letters one by one. That's how I made this one, although I forget what the sample was. And we never made actual font files. We placed each letter 1 by 1, so they'd have a little organic variation that you won't get from typing them. Also, alternate versions of some characters, so that the two L's in HOLLISTER wouldn't look exactly the same. I'm a big believer in doing things the slow, hard way sometimes because that's often how you get the little details that add up to a product that nobody else can (or will) make.

If you watched MTV, VH1 or Fuse in the 2000's you saw Justin Harder's work many, many times. This is his 2004 reel, and probably my single favorite design artifact of all time. He's pretty lowkey these days, but his work blew EVERYONE away back then and he was one of the most copied designers of the decade (myself included). IMO a lot of this stuff would still look fresh as hell if it came out today, and he definitely deserves his flowers for being such a huge part of that and era/aesthetic that so many people loved. AFAIK he's not on here, so I can't tag him.

In 1961 Mattel created a Barbie album. It was extremely well done, and the songs were Sinatra /Nelson Riddle style arrangements with a big band, and very clever lyrics! And the girl who sang as Barbie could really sing.

In 1915, a farmer saw his sister making mascara from coal dust and petroleum jelly and believed he could create a better version. His product was easier to apply and less likely to irritate the eyes. He named the company Maybelline by combining his sisterโ€™s name, Maybel, with Vaseline.
