Representation of deaf characters in literature and the media is incredibly important. Readers need characters that they can relate to. Here is a comprehensive review of books from the NDCS for deaf children, teens and parents:

The 6 ling sounds (mm, oo, aah, ee, sh, ss) encompass the frequency range of all phonemes, so they can help to determine whether the full range of speech frequencies can be heard. They are used as a helpful check to ensure hearing devices are working.
