New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a citywide campaign to highlight legal protections for transgender New Yorkers during Pride Month.
Speaking during the latest instalment of the Mayor's Office livestream series ‘Talk With The People’ on 4 June, Mamdani said the initiative would focus on ensuring trans residents understand the rights and protections available to them across all five boroughs.
"There are far too many trans New Yorkers who have been made to feel not only that they don't belong in the city, but that they don't enjoy the full protections of the law in this city," he said.
Mamdani described New York as a "haven for queer people from across the country and across the world" and said the campaign would celebrate Pride both symbolically and through tangible action. He added that his administration wants to make clear that trans New Yorkers are protected under city law and that those protections remain firmly in place.
