The term sexual assault refers to sexual contact or behavior that occurs without explicit consent of the victim including attempted or actual rape, fondling or unwanted sexual touching, and any sexual act or any attempt to obtain a sexual act by force or coercion, regardless of relationship to the victim. RAINN, 2022 is the cited source.
ALT In 8 out of 10 cases of sexual violence, survivors know their perpetrator. Women are disproportionately victimized with women of color and transwomen being at an even greater risk. Nearly 1 in 4 men have reported an experience of sexual violence. Ages 12-34 are at the highest risk. Victims are more likely to suffer suicidal or depressive thoughts, use drugs, and are at a higher risk of pregnancy and STIs. Victims' relationships with loved ones may be negatively impacted. ALT Sexual violence is never the victim's fault, but the following are ways to increase general safety. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings, don't travel alone, yell loudly, trust your gut, protect your drinks at all times, stay in well-lit areas, etc. Rich, 2022 is cited as a source.
