William Seward Burroughs (Naked Lunch, Junkie) was born on #OTD, Feb. 5, 1914. He co-authored the book, And The Hippos Were Boiled In Their Tanks, with #JackKerouac a decade before the two became famous as leading figures of the #BeatGeneration. #Kerouac101#WilliamSBurroughs
(1/6) Let’s be honest, 2023 was rough. It’s astounding to witness, to this day, devastating wars being waged, lives lost and taken, and people suffering severely.
(5/6) As the new year starts, let’s maintain our compassion, adaptability, strength, relentlessness, and bravery as we keep fighting for what is just and good. Let’s remember and honor those whose lives have been taken, their loved ones, and ours.
(4/6) The human condition and our shared experiences make us more alike than we may think. We are all connected through these experiences and we share in grief as we do in love.
(3/6) What’s more astounding, to me, is how incredibly brave, relentless, strong, adaptable, and compassionate people can be toward each other. In tragedy, we continue to rise up and fight against what is unjust, unequal, and immoral.
It's the last poetry event in Orlando in 2023. You can read poetry with an improv jazz band backing you up AT THE KEROUAC HOUSE!
We're hosting the Jazz and Poetry Jam on Dec. 29, 8 – 10 PM. Read for 5 - 7 minutes with French poet Patrick Sacleux.

Jack has been commemorated in infrastructure! Kerouac Park is in Lowell, Mass. Rue Jack-Kerouac is in Quebec City, and there's the hamlet of Kerouac, Lanmeur, Brittany. The city of San Francisco named a one-way street, Jack Kerouac Alley, in Chinatown. #Kerouac101#JackKerouac
Jack introduced the term "beat" in 1948. He first heard it in a conversation with street hustler Herbert Huncke (see photo), who used the term to describe a person with little money and few prospects. americanwritersmuseum.org/mo…#Kerouac101#JackKerouac
